As the Director of Quality, you will be an individual contributor with a 100% focus on end-to-end performance and reliability of our products and services. While you may build a team over time, your initial role will be a hands-on leadership position with direct influence over quality assessments and the implementation of quality standards. This position will focus on cross-functional collaboration with Software Engineering, Device Engineering, and Operations teams.

 

*This is a local position based in Birmingham, and you will work closely with leadership to ensure that quality standards align with overall product and service delivery goals.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Quality Assurance & Performance Measurement

  • Measure End-to-End Quality: Objectively evaluate the quality of existing services and systems to prioritize fixes that will benefit both customers and business outcomes.
  • Establish Quality Standards: Collaborate with management and engineers to define quality and reliability standards based on product and consumer requirements.
  • In-Process Inspection: Develop testing methods and procedures to assess service delivery processes, ensuring continuous improvement in quality.
  • Quality Documentation: Create and maintain a product quality documentation system by writing and updating quality assurance procedures.
  • Performance Benchmarking: Develop and publish baseline performance metrics for products and services. Identify areas for performance improvement across the software and hardware domains.

Quality Alignment & Planning

  • Align with Product Schedules: Ensure quality assessments are closely aligned with overall product and service delivery timelines.
  • Planning & Estimation: Accurately plan, estimate, and track the delivery of quality team’s workload and tasks.
  • Operational Requirements: Schedule and assign quality assurance tasks to meet operational needs and follow up to ensure completion and results.
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage quarterly and annual budgets for the quality team.
  • Goal Setting: Influence company-wide goal setting, break them down into actionable sub-goals for the quality team, and track progress.
  • Resource Management: Secure the necessary tools, equipment, and resources required to meet company objectives.

Leadership & Cultural Excellence

  • Promote Quality Culture: Foster and champion a culture of excellence within the organization, ensuring that quality is embedded in every team and process.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with Software Engineering, Device Engineering, and Operations teams to define and adhere to shared definitions of ‘quality.’
  • Quality Metrics: Regularly publish and update quality metrics, keeping all stakeholders informed on progress and challenges.

Team Development & Growth

  • Team Building: Over time, build and develop a high-performing quality assurance team through recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training new employees.
  • Performance Management: Manage the performance of the quality team by providing ongoing coaching, counseling, and discipline when necessary.
  • Continuous Improvement: Ensure quality is maintained and improved by planning, monitoring, and appraising job results and team contributions.

Qualifications:

 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Quality Management, or a related field. Master’s degree or certifications in quality assurance (e.g., Six Sigma, CQE) preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in a quality assurance role, with a focus on both software and hardware systems.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing quality assurance processes, cross-functional collaboration, and performance measurement in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong experience in working with software systems (e.g., software testing, QA automation, continuous integration) and hardware systems (e.g., product testing, reliability assessments).
  • Solid understanding of quality frameworks such as ISO, Six Sigma, Lean, and other quality management methodologies.

  • Strong Analytical Skills: Ability to objectively assess the quality of products and services, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement effective solutions.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving skills to address complex quality issues in both hardware and software domains.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively across departments (Software Engineering, Device Engineering, and Operations) to align quality initiatives.
  • Leadership & Mentoring: Ability to mentor and guide a quality assurance team, even if team-building occurs in phases.
  • Excellent Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate quality metrics, strategies, and issues with various stakeholders.
  • Project Management: Strong planning and organizational skills to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and resources effectively.
  • Additional Requirements:
  • Local to Birmingham: This role requires the individual to be local to the Birmingham area for collaboration and company involvement.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where priorities may shift based on business needs.
