At EBSCO Information Services (EIS) we’re helping to build a vibrant ecosystem to advance research, teaching and learning. We seek a Principal product manager (PPM) with strong business acumen to become a primary resident product expert for a subset of our SaaS products and promote alignment with EIS’s overarching product strategy.   The PPM will collaborate with industry experts to define, deliver, and roll-out new products / services, and enhancements to existing products, to maximize impact for libraries served by EIS worldwide.

Primary Responsibilities

Planning and Delivery (pre-launch activities)

  • Conduct competitive / industry analysis and organize findings.
  • Analyze reported customer issues and enhancement requests to understand market needs and organize/categorize them.
  • Work with business owners to define their vision and business requirements as a set of well-written features describing market problems and target-state solutions with clear acceptance criteria.
  • Engage with User Experience (UX) teams to collaborate on UX solutions, informed by customer and user research/feedback to validate both the problem space and solution design.
  • Collaborate with software architects and Product Owners (PO) to ensure the necessary technical capabilities are in place on which to build high performing, secure, and extensible software features.
  • Provide detailed scenarios to enable the PO/agile development teams to better understand the intent of features from the perspective of the market problem being solved/user persona needs.
  • Serve as the point-person and customer/end-user proxy to agile development teams throughout the development cycle.
  • Provide exemplary leadership in managing roadmap and priorities to maximize incremental value delivery.
  • Ensure successful high-quality release of features that meet customer needs.
  • Testing of key features and clearly describe any unexpected results to enable remediation by development team.
  • Proactively communicate progress, decisions, impediments, and risks throughout projects.
  • Become the subject matter expert for certain EIS SaaS products, managing communications and relationships with diverse stakeholders to facilitate the best possible business outcomes.

Launch Management / GTM activities

  • Lead and facilitate meetings with key stakeholder groups including Product Management, Marketing, Client Services, and Sales to gain internal alignment on Go-to-market (GTM) activities.
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of customer and end-user value proposition materials, customer-facing product presentations, and content for marketing collateral.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to define product roll-out strategies and detailed plans, define key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure effectiveness/impact, and promote client adoption.
  • Document system functionality to enable Beta testing and development of customer-facing marketing and training materials.
  • Collaborate with sales and customer operations / support teams to ensure feature launch activities are completed in a timely manner.

Adoption & Impact (Post-launch activities)

  • Usage metrics / Analytics – Manage data analysis related to customer product usage and mapping to product delivery roadmaps and business goals / KPI’s that will help us derive improved insights on usage.
  • Customer engagement tracking –  Track customers and adoption rates, and collaborate with Sales to promote user adoption. 
  • Market Feedback tracking –  Track customer- and user-generated feedback.  Troubleshoot/triage service issues reported by internal and external end-users.  Determine pervasiveness and impact of market-driven issues to drive product priorities and adoption plans.

Skills or experience that you need

  • 10+ years working in a Product Management, Product Owner, or Business Analyst capacity in a software delivery capacity or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years working in lean-agile software development environment, such as Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe.
  • A proven track record of product management and delivery of world-class consumer facing software or services.
  • A history of mentoring and coaching peers and junior team members in a software development environment.
  • Leadership and coaching skills; ability to successfully improve team performance through exemplary conduct, emotional intelligence, and non-intrusive teaching.
  • Understands best practices in usability, agile development, product management, analytics and product lifecycle management and has successfully led adoption of best practices in one or more of these areas.
  • Extensive experience at prioritizing, road-mapping, and explaining your approach to diverse audiences.
  • Experienced in leading strategic discussions with executives, partners, and customers.
  • Experienced in developing the positioning and value proposition for existing and new products, including features, benefits and competitive differentiators.
  • Deep library domain expertise coupled with experience managing a portfolio of products.
  • Experienced in the use of a variety of business analysis tools and techniques to aid in the breakdown of large chunks of work, elicit requirements, or make decisions.
  • Experienced in highlighting difficult, systemic problems and working with others to define and implement effective solutions.
  • Promotes an enjoyable working environment, positive team health, camaraderie, joy, and fun in the workplace.

Skills or experience that sets you apart

  • Ability to speak on-behalf of the company in communications with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experienced in building or managing a new product category from the ground up and taking it to market.
  • Experienced in building integrations and developer communities with customers, development partners and competitors.
  • An understanding of technical systems at a level sufficient to assist with decision making and sequencing of key technology improvements to execute dependent features.
  • Familiarity with the Pragmatic Marketing Framework.
  • Certified scrum master or product owner.
  • Experience with software development in AWS.
  • Master’s in Library and Information Science or Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
