Lead User Interface Engineer

We are looking to recruit a highly-skilled Lead User Interface Engineer to join our User Experience Design team in Ipswich. The UX Strategy & Design team is responsible for creating highly extensible interfaces for our Information Discovery and Research Experience products. This position will look to bring UX design & process thought leadership, bridging UX design with front end technologies to help advance our overall experience quality and efficiency toward iterative product development.   


As a Lead UI Engineer, you will primarily be developing the gold standard design patterns and interactions (HTML5/CSS/JS) which represent the final intended product design. You will be responsible for establishing and managing a fully detailed design pattern library in concert with a front-end component repository. To excel, you’ll need a solid understanding of front end prototyping for experimentation with API data, web application architecture, CSS layouts and content management systems (CMS).

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for coding UX / UI design patterns and interactions for our Product Experiences 
  • Support ongoing UX design efforts, from concepting to detailed wireframing and visual design
  • Produce interim deliverables such as style guide components, technical specifications, browser and market analysis, prototypes, proofs of concept, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with product management, architecture, development and platform teams to define the UX design system, including aspects such as theming, globalization and accessibility  
  • Work closely with enterprise architecture team and back-end developers to ensure UI integrity throughout the development life-cycle
  • Support overall QA and refinement efforts to ensure constant improvement over time
  • Advance team effectiveness through design thinking methods and agile development (SAFe)

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive experience across aspects of User Experience Design to Front End Development on complex web-based software for search or similarly complex function
  • Strong skills in HTML frameworks, CSS, JavaScript and other front-end related technologies
  • Strong skills with design tools (e.g. Sketch, Adobe CC Suite / XD, Webflow, InVision)
  • Experience with React.js community
  • Ability to work with multiple, distributed teams
  • The ideal candidate is familiar with library systems and the library technology industry.  Knowledge of online database research products, institutional repositories
  • Experience with Agile, specifically SAFe
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably continued education focus on Computer Science or Web Design
