Software Engineer - DevOps


As a Software/DevOps Engineer, you will work on an Agile development team building, testing and deploying great products and services for our customers.  You will create information products and services that inform the world, advancing research in traditional and emerging fields and transforming learning and education.


As a member of an Agile team, you will support the development environment; building capabilities that will ensure quality and facilitate the rapid, reliable deployment of new features for a wide range of EBSCO products. You will be responsible for enabling teams to continuously deliver software, providing quick feedback with respect to the capability, and upholding the integrity of the evolving end-to-end solution. You will work in 2-week iterations as part of an Agile Release Train developing to a SAFe Program Increment . You will make commitments to the business and meet those commitments as a team. You will strive for continuous improvement in knowledge and productivity, and display a pattern of continual learning and a desire to broaden your software development and design skills.


What you’ll do

  • Contribute to system architecture, design, implementation, testing, delivery, and operation of components for EBSCO web and mobile based products and services.
  • Collaborate with your team to estimate the size and complexity of the features.  Perform the technical design, implementation, and testing of features and commit to stories to be accomplished in an iteration.
  • Own system and feature quality throughout the development, testing and deployment phases to ensure quality delivery expectations are met.
  • Drive value and build to continuously improve the quality of the team’s deliverables. Author well-engineered solutions using test-first/test-driven methodologies.
  • Conduct new technology research, proof of concept, and design work that will assist in determining direction for the enhancement of the overall system and products.
  • Provide ongoing maintenance, support and enhancements in existing systems and platforms.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of your team.
  • Work alongside other engineers to elevate technology and consistently apply best practices for design, coding standards, performance, security, delivery, and maintainability.
  • Live the principles behind the Agile Manifesto and SAFe framework in all interactions.
  • Work in conjunction with engineering, product management, and business groups to understand functionality, scalability, performance, security, and integration requirements.
  • Develop, improve, and thoroughly document operational practices and procedures. Implement enhancements and practices for modern development principles and methodologies.
  • Develop and maintain tooling to assist with things like integration tests, performance tooling, building production and staging environments, CI systems, source control etc.
  • Make recommendations for architectural enhancements to improve security & performance
  • Automate repetitive tasks in the department's workflow.
  • Create and build out the service delivery tool set and document it along.
  • Break, Fix, Automate, Repeat.

Skills or experience you need

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or other Technical related degree or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of Java and/or .NET development (C#) 
  • 2+ years of experience in large systems software design and development with hands on experience in RESTful Web Services, HTML, XML/JSON, HTTP, SSL.
  • Familiarity with both Windows + Linux (RHEL) application servers
  • Fluid virtual infrastructures (VMware, Docker, AWS, OpenStack)
  • SVN/GIT alongside Agile development processes
  • Solid understanding of Jenkins Pipeline, leveraging shared pipeline libraries, and the “infrastructure-as-code” paradigm.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 


Skills or experience that sets you apart

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • One or more JavaScript frameworks (React, AngularJS, Node.js) and JavaScript libraries
    • Test Driven Development (TDD) and Automated Testing with JUnit, LoadRunner, etc.
    • Working on an Agile team.
    • Experience developing tools and/or automation frameworks
    • Networking, storage and sysadmin
    • Understanding of performance metrics from stress/load tests
    • Web Services lifecycle (design, build, test, deploy), API versioning and design approaches, tools, inter-operability, and SOA concepts.
    • Microservices and microservice design patterns.
    • Developing automated integration or acceptance tests scenarios.
    • Performance testing strategies and techniques.
