This role has the responsibility to work with technology leadership across EBSCO and the open source community to ensure EBSCO best practices are followed and supported where possible in the design, development, delivery, and maintenance of the Library Services Platform. You will work closely with product management leadership to establish clear business and technical context for Engineering Teams and lead development teams to deliver software solutions. This role reports to the VP of Development.


General Responsibilities:

  • Manage offshore (contractor) teams (6-8 teams).  This will include managing the contractor managers who are responsible for the day to day team management.
  • Manage staff (~5-7 engineers), with focus on their career development and growth.
  • Work directly with product owners and business representatives to provide business solutions from inception to operation.
  • Own system and feature quality throughout the requirements, design, development, testing, and deployment phases to ensure quality delivery expectations are met. 
  • Stay abreast of industry/technology trends relevant to the Software Engineering discipline.  In cooperation with System Architects, conduct new technology research, proof of concept, and design work that will provide direction for the enhancement of the overall system and products.
  • Regularly review team performance, collaborate with them on improvement initiatives/experiments 
  • Attract, recruit, retain, and develop top engineering talent.
  • Act as a servant leader to the teams so that they are enabled to maximize the value they can deliver to the business.

    • Liaise with FSE Operations/Automation and assist in a timely resolution of the production issues
    • Capture and address concerns aimed at improving software quality

    • Manage offshore (contractor) teams (6-8 teams).  This will include managing the contractor managers who are responsible for the day to day team management

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 15+ years’ experience in software development
  • 10+ years’ experience as a senior team lead or manager in an agile SW development environment
  • 5+ years’ experience in agile/Scrum/Kanban/SAFe
  • 5+ years’ experience with Java development
  • Proven track record in fostering, grooming, and growing self-governed teams
  • Proven track record in attracting new talent and retaining key talent
  • Ability to collaborate and build consensus
  • Ability to build trust-based relationships
  • Ability to quickly understand and assess technical aspects of our products and components
  • Ability to advise on best practices (architecture, implementation, team dynamics, etc.) 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Superb communication and presentation skills
    • Technical presentations for technical and business audiences
    • Written communications and thought leadership on technical issues
    • Verbal communications in working groups and large group settings       
  • Capable of contributing technically when necessary
  • Solid knowledge of software design patterns, algorithms, data structures and modern programming techniques
  • Database design and data architecture skills
  • Relevant experience
    • Building high volume search applications
    • Microservice architecture
    • Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery
