Cloud Operations Director

As the Cloud Operations Director, you will play a key role in helping EBSCO become a cloud first company. You will provide our internal EIS development teams the operational support to adopt cloud best practices while leveraging best of breed cloud offerings in a platform-oriented way. The Cloud Operations Director will be responsible for the Cloud Operations teams, managing teams that provide operational support to applications moving to the cloud. More specifically this includes EIS use of the AWS public cloud and the leadership of the EIS Site Reliability Engineering teams.

You will also serve as a member of the Cloud Leadership Team and be responsible for collaborating on cross-technology divisional objectives. 


What you’ll do

  • Manage teams providing operational support for applications migrated to the cloud as well as our internal development platforms and infrastructure
  • Promote and develop strong engineering fundamentals across operations and reliability functions, in an SRE-oriented approach
  • Establish an environment where team members have the time, resources, and incentives to enhance their skills
  • Establish a sustainable on-call rotation that honors SLAs without burning out team members
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and standards (e.g., information security, data handling, PCI, encryption)
  • Allocate time to setup proper logging, operational metrics, customer intake, alarm mechanisms, and runbooks/documentation
  • Hold postmortems and document outage impact and lessons learned to ensure problems don’t repeat
  • Prioritize root cause resolution, automation, and projects that improve customer experience and the teamwork environment
  • Partner with Cloud Platform Engineering to identify and implement automation opportunities for operations
  • Determine and promote the metrics to measure key operational processes are in place, and if not work to define them
  • Provide management reporting of SLAs, KPIs, and continuous improvement initiatives

Skills or experience you need

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years IT management experience
  • Experience leading SRE teams in a SaaS environment
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals
  • Solid understanding of the design approaches and technologies utilized by the team
  • A keen interest in Cloud Transformation
  • Willingness to research and self-study to keep skills relevant in a highly complex environment
  • Innovative and ability to think outside the box for creative problem solving
  • Mentors and coaches colleagues and seeks opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Comfortable working in cross functional and multidisciplinary teams
